Shared Vision: Training & Career Development in North London
The Current Job Market and Employment Opportunities in North London
The North London sub region was created to define the area comprised by the boroughs of Barnet, Enfield, Camden, Haringey, Hackney, Islington, and parts of Westminster. The area is home to approximately 1.9 million people and it is connected to other areas of the city by adequate tube and rail links.
Employment in this sub region traditionally depended on the heavy manufacturing sector. However, in the 1990s there was a surge in unemployment as many industries in this field closed down. Although there are still some employment opportunities in this sector, currently they only account for 7 per cent of the total jobs available. By contrast, the largest number of employment opportunities in North London are in the public services sector, which includes education, health care, and public administration. The finance and banking sector is second to public services in terms of the number of job opportunities, and the third place is shared by industries like retail and entertainment. Since the mid-2000s, North London has seen an increase in the number of firms in the creative industries sector that have chosen this part of the city as their base. It is estimated that in North London there are more than 3,000 companies involved in this sector, mainly those in areas like advertising, electronic publishing, the arts, and architecture.
Major employers include the local councils, the NHS Trust, Credit Union, Cannon Automotive, Tottenham Hotspur, and the North London College.
Professional career development in North London
There are several pathways to follow if you are a student interested in pursuing a career in business, finance, or management. One option is to take an undergraduate course (or postgraduate if you are looking to specialise in one particular area) at the London Metropolitan University Business School. There are courses available in finance, economics, marketing and communications, management, leadership and strategy, and creative industries. These courses cater to both full time students and to those who need to combine their studies with work or family responsibilities, and often include a work placement in companies like the BBC, Barclays, HSBC, and BP. Shorter professional courses are also available from this institution, mainly in subjects like digital marketing, advertising, and credit management. The London Metropolitan University also offers accredited executive courses and diploma programmes in partnership with institutions like the London Financial Academy and the Management Development Unit.
An alternative way of pursuing your career development goals is to enrol at one of the local colleges. The North London College offers diploma courses in leadership and management and professional courses in accounting and administrative management. The College of North East London has courses in administration, accounting, and business, some of which include work experience opportunities. There are also pre-apprenticeships in business administration available from this college.
The Metropolitan University is also known for its extensive range of business solutions. If you are a new entrepreneur or a local business in need of advice and support, you might be interested in initiatives like Business Work (which can help with your recruitment needs), the LMBS Enterprise (consisting of business incubators and support for the self-employed), and the strategic road-mapping services offered by experienced academics.
Short courses on coaching, professional development, and business skills are offered over the summer months by the North London Chamber of Commerce.

Further Considerations: If you do not yet have a drivers license you should consider getting one. Having a clean, current license allows you to apply for a significantly larger number of positions and gives you a greater level of flexibility in where you can work. Even within London, there are locations that are not easily accessible by public transport, and having the ability to drive can be a distinct advantage. If you do not yet know how to drive, find a driving instructor in London here.
